Dear CFD Engine 94 Team,
I want to start by expressing my deepest gratitude for your critical work on the frontlines during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Your dedication and sacrifice have not gone unnoticed, and I truly appreciate the courage it takes to serve in such challenging times.
In addition to that, I wanted to share a personal reflection regarding the emotional turmoil our country is experiencing following the tragic death of George Floyd. As a clinical psychologist based in Chicago, I’ve spent years working with individuals who are dealing with grief, trauma, and loss. The recent events in Minneapolis and across the country are not just about anger—they’re deeply rooted in a long history of racial injustice, systemic oppression, and collective trauma.
The people who are protesting are not just reacting to one event; they're responding to a lifetime of pain, frustration, and unmet needs. These emotions are powerful, and they need to be validated—not dismissed or minimized. I know that as first responders, you are under immense pressure, but I believe there’s an opportunity to approach these situations with more empathy and understanding.
What if, instead of being seen as enforcers of control, you could be perceived as allies in healing? Imagine wearing signs like “I Can’t Breathe†or “Black Lives Matter†on your uniforms or vehicles. It might seem unconventional, but it could send a powerful message: that you understand the pain, that you see the humanity behind the protests, and that your goal is to protect, not to silence.
This kind of gesture could help build trust between the community and those in authority. It could shift the dynamic from one of confrontation to one of shared concern and mutual respect. It doesn’t mean compromising safety, but rather approaching it with compassion and awareness of the psychological impact of trauma.
I’m not suggesting this is a quick fix, but it’s something worth considering. You’re not just managing chaos—you’re helping people process their grief and find a way forward. And sometimes, that starts with showing up not just as officers, but as human beings who care.
Thank you again for your service and for taking the time to read this. I hope my thoughts add value to your important work.
Warm regards,
Kristen Friedman, PsyD
