Flyability and Mirion Technologies announce collaboration to support nuclear operators

This collaboration marks a major step forward in enhancing safety and efficiency in nuclear environments. The integration of Mirion’s RDS-32™ radiation survey meter into Flyability’s Elios 3 drone allows for remote data collection, keeping personnel out of hazardous areas while still gathering critical radiation information in real time.

The live data streaming capability ensures that operators can make immediate decisions during drone flights, while the post-flight analysis provides detailed insights for further evaluation. This technology is especially valuable in high-risk environments where human exposure to radiation must be minimized.

To validate the system, Flyability worked with the Idaho Environmental Coalition (IEC), a DOE contractor, on a project involving the collection of LiDAR and radiation data inside a radioactive waste storage vault. The mission was successful, providing essential data for future waste removal planning.

Our equipment is already widely used, so this partnership allows customers to leverage their existing programs and improve safety even further.”

Additional tests with major nuclear power companies demonstrated the reliability of the RDS-32 mounted on the Elios 3. Notably, it was used to detect and analyze hot spots on a large turbine deck, showcasing its versatility and precision.

Flyability will be showcasing the integrated system at the 2023 National Radiological Emergency Preparedness (NREP) Conference from April 3rd to 6th in Indianapolis, Indiana. Attendees will have the opportunity to see the technology in action and learn more about its applications.
