February 27, 2023 — Flyability, a leading provider of indoor drone solutions, has announced a strategic partnership with Mirion Technologies, Inc. (NYSE: MIR), a global leader in radiation detection and monitoring systems. This collaboration marks a significant step forward in enhancing safety and efficiency in nuclear operations.
Under the new agreement, Mirion’s RDS-32™ radiation survey meter will be integrated into Flyability’s Elios 3 indoor drone. This integration allows nuclear operators to collect precise radiation data remotely, reducing the need for personnel to enter hazardous or confined spaces. The real-time data captured during flights can also be used for post-flight analysis, offering greater insight and accuracy.
“Mirion is at the forefront of radiation sensing technology,†said Patrick Thévoz, CEO of Flyability. “By combining their advanced tools with our drones, we’re empowering nuclear professionals to conduct inspections more safely and efficiently. This partnership will significantly reduce worker exposure to radiation and improve overall site safety.â€
To validate the system, Flyability partnered with the Idaho Environmental Coalition (IEC), a contractor for the Department of Energy (DOE), as well as several energy companies across the U.S. and Europe. One key project involved collecting LiDAR and radiation data inside a radioactive waste storage vault. The mission was a success, providing critical data needed for future waste removal efforts.
Steve Mettler, Director of Product Management at Mirion, added, “We are excited to work with Flyability to enhance radiation safety in nuclear facilities. The integration of the RDS-32 with the Elios 3 allows access to previously dangerous areas, helping operators make informed decisions while keeping workers safe.â€
In addition to the IEC project,
Other missions with major nuclear power companies demonstrated the effectiveness of the RDS-32 mounted on the Elios 3. Notably, the system was used to identify and characterize hot spots on a turbine deck at a multi-gigawatt plant.
Alexandre Meldem, Managing Director of the Americas at Flyability, noted, “Over 80% of U.S. nuclear operators already use our drones for visual inspections. Adding Mirion’s advanced radiation sensing capabilities will further improve operational safety and efficiency.â€
Flyability will showcase this innovative solution at the 2023 National Radiological Emergency Preparedness (NREP) Conference from April 3rd to 6th in Indianapolis, IN.
