Highland Fire Department news

Excerpts from the Bellevillenews-democrat.com:

A tragic incident unfolded early Thursday in Glen Carbon, Illinois, when a fire broke out at the home of Cristy Lynn Campbell around 5:15 a.m. The blaze claimed the life of an adult, while six children—ranging in age from 2 to 14—managed to escape. The location is about 30 miles east of St. Louis. Authorities have not yet identified the deceased, but it is believed to be Cristy Campbell’s estranged husband and the father of the children, Justin Campbell, who has not been located since the incident.

Some of the children ran to a nearby Walmart, while others sought shelter at a neighbor’s house. One of the kids at the store asked an employee to call 911, according to Sheriff John Lakin. At the time of the fire, Cristy Campbell was not at home, nor was the couple’s youngest child, a 3-month-old son.

About 16 miles away, in Highland, Illinois, a motorist spotted a car heading toward Silver Lake around 5:31 a.m. and called 911. Highland Fire Department paramedic Todd Zobrist jumped into the 46-degree water and swam 50 to 75 feet to reach an SUV where he found a baby floating inside. He pulled the child to the hood, began CPR, and then swam with the infant to shore. The baby, who was initially unresponsive, is expected to recover and could be released from a hospital in St. Charles, Missouri, on Friday.

Following the rescue, authorities searched the lake and recovered a body around 11:15 a.m. Although the identity of the deceased has not been confirmed, officials have stopped their search for Cristy Campbell.

Court records reveal that Cristy and Justin Campbell had a troubled relationship. In 2005, before they were married, Justin was charged with domestic abuse after allegedly slapping Cristy, who was pregnant at the time. He received probation and a $500 fine in March 2006. Despite this, the couple married in November 2006.

In September 2010, Cristy filed for legal separation, but the case was dismissed two months later. In April 2012, she obtained an emergency protection order against her husband and filed for divorce, citing repeated abuse, including being punched and choked. Their divorce was finalized in February 2013.

Local police have responded to multiple calls at the Campbell residence over the years, including incidents involving domestic issues. As of now, the children are in the care of Illinois authorities and will be placed with relatives.
