Working fire in Chicago, 12/31/16

At 0700 hrs on Saturday morning (December 31), companies from Chicago’s 6th Battalion were dispatched to a vacant apartment building located at 5149 S. Honore Ave. Engine 123 arrived first and found heavy fire in the rear porches. They quickly deployed a hand line from the exterior, successfully containing the flames and preventing them from spreading to the adjacent occupied building. Although some fire extended into the structure, it was largely controlled using an interior line through the front door after crews forced entry. A second line was also deployed up Tower Ladder 39 to tackle hot spots in the attic. The fire was mostly extinguished within minutes, and although crews remained on scene for an extended period conducting thorough overhaul, it appeared to be a well-coordinated and effective response from an amateur observer's perspective.
