Highland Fire Department news
Excerpts from the Bellevillenews-democrat.com: A tragic incident unfolded early Thursday in Glen Carbon, Illinois, when a fire broke out at a home owned by Cristy Lynn Campbell. The blaze resulted in the death of an adult, though six children—ranging in age up to 14—managed to escape unharmed. Glen Carbon is located approximately 30 miles east of St. Louis. According to Sheriff John Lakin, the deceased has not yet been officially identified. However, it was confirmed that Cristy’s estranged husband and the father of the children, Justin Campbell, is still missing. Authorities are currently investigating his whereabouts. Some of the children fled to a nearby Wal-Mart, while others sought shelter at a neighbor’s house. One of the kids at the store called an employee, who then alerted emergency services, Lakin reported. Cristy Campbell was not present at the scene when firefighters arrived, nor was the couple’s youngest child, a 3-month-old boy. This raised further concerns about what had transpired inside the home. About 16 miles away, near Silver Lake in Highland, Illinois, a motorist spotted a vehicle heading down a hill toward the water and immediately called 911. At 5:31 a.m., emergency responders were on the scene. Highland Fire Department Paramedic Todd Zobrist quickly jumped into the 46-degree water and swam 50 to 75 feet to reach an SUV. Inside, he found a baby floating in the car. He pulled the child by the arm to the hood, began CPR, and then swam with the infant to the shore. The baby, who was initially unresponsive, is now recovering and is expected to be released from a hospital in St. Charles, Missouri, on Friday. Following the rescue, authorities launched a search of the lake. A body was recovered around 11:15 a.m., but it has not yet been identified. Police have since suspended their search for Cristy Campbell. Court records reveal that Cristy and Justin Campbell had a turbulent relationship. In 2005, before they married, Justin was charged with domestic abuse after allegedly slapping Cristy, who was pregnant at the time. He received probation and a $500 fine in March 2006. Despite the abuse, the couple married on November 3, 2006. Cristy filed for legal separation in September 2010, but the case was dismissed two months later. In April 2012, she obtained an emergency protection order against her husband and filed for divorce, citing repeated incidents of physical abuse, including being punched and choked. The divorce was finalized in February 2013. Sheriff Lakin noted that local police had responded to multiple calls at the Campbell home, some related to domestic issues. Currently, the children are in the care of Illinois authorities and will be placed with family members as part of the ongoing investigation.
