A group of 780MVA/500kV three-phase combined power transformers, the largest in the world by capacity, was successfully shipped by TBEA Shenyang Transformer Group Co., Ltd. through a split transportation approach. These new products, characterized by compact size, high capacity, and low losses, represent another major UHV (Ultra High Voltage) and large-capacity product independently developed by the company in recent years.
The Longtan Water Conservancy Project is the largest hydropower project currently under construction in China, following the Three Gorges Dam on the Yangtze River. It serves as a key milestone for the western development strategy and the “West-to-East Power Transmission†initiative. In late 2004, TBEA Shenyang emerged victorious from intense competition among bidders, thanks to its outstanding design plan, securing the contract to supply all seven sets of transformers with a total value of nearly 160 million yuan.
To meet the unique transportation challenges in Guangxi and account for the constraints of transformer installation within tunnels, TBEA Shenyang adopted a three-phase combined structure. By implementing a split transportation and on-site assembly method, the company not only solved the transportation issue but also reduced earthwork and construction costs. This innovative design, which integrates three units into one, is complex and technically demanding. The successful delivery of this product marks the first phase of large-capacity three-phase combined transformers and provides valuable experience for future hydropower projects. It further strengthens the company’s industry standing and showcases its technical capabilities.
Looking ahead, more large-scale hydropower projects, second only to the Three Gorges, are expected to be built in the southwest region. Transformers used in these projects will need to address the challenge of transporting large equipment under special traffic conditions. The successful implementation of split transportation here not only solves the problem but also opens up new market opportunities, giving TBEA a competitive edge in an evolving industry.
