A group of 780MVA/500kV three-phase combined power transformers, the largest in the world by capacity, was successfully shipped by TBEA Shenyang Transformer Group Co., Ltd. using a split transportation method. These advanced transformers, featuring compact design, high capacity, and low losses, represent another major UHV (Ultra High Voltage) product independently developed by the company in recent years.
The Longtan Water Conservancy Project stands as the largest hydropower project currently under construction in China, following the Three Gorges Dam on the Yangtze River. It is a key milestone in the implementation of the western development strategy and the "West-to-East Power Transmission" initiative. In late 2004, TBEA Shenyang emerged victorious from intense competition among bidders with its outstanding design proposal, securing the contract to supply all seven sets of transformers, with a total value of nearly 160 million yuan.
To address the unique transportation challenges in Guangxi and account for the constraints of installing the transformers inside tunnels, TBEA Shenyang opted for a three-phase combined structure. This approach involved splitting the transformers for transport and assembling them on-site. This innovative method not only solved the transportation issue but also reduced earthwork and lowered overall construction costs. The design of integrating three units into one is technically complex and requires precise manufacturing. The successful delivery of this product marks the first phase of large-capacity three-phase combined transformers, providing valuable experience for future hydropower projects and reinforcing the company's industry leadership and technical capabilities.
Looking ahead, more large-scale hydropower projects—second only to the Three Gorges—will be developed in Southwest China. The challenge of transporting such large transformers under difficult road conditions will become increasingly important. The successful implementation of this split transportation solution not only addresses a critical issue but also opens up new market opportunities for TBEA Shenyang, positioning it strongly for future growth.
