"Please help, how can we get an MSDS?" At the start of the new year, reporters received multiple calls from chemical companies asking for assistance. It turns out that with the fifth year of China's entry into the WTO, domestic chemical firms are now focusing on a crucial step to enter the global market: obtaining chemical safety certification.
What is known as a chemical safety certification is also called a Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS). In developed countries, it's legally required for all chemical manufacturers or sellers to provide an MSDS that matches their product exactly. This document must include detailed information on 16 key aspects—such as physical and chemical properties, flammability, health risks, safe handling, storage, spill response, first aid measures, and relevant regulations. In short, the MSDS acts as a "passport" for chemicals in international trade. Without it, products cannot be sold abroad. Its main purpose is to ensure that users have accurate and timely access to chemical-related information, thus safeguarding their safety.
In China, MSDS is still a relatively new concept. However, with the growth of foreign trade, more companies are beginning to encounter and understand the importance of MSDS. Especially those exporting specialty chemicals have started preparing their own MSDS documents to meet foreign buyers' requirements. Due to the complexity of the data involved and the varying legal standards across different countries, producing a reliable MSDS requires high professional expertise. As a result, specialized organizations offering MSDS services have emerged in cities like Shanghai, Shenzhen, and Beijing.
According to the reporter, China currently lacks strict legal regulations regarding the production of MSDS by chemical manufacturers, and its adoption remains limited. While some export-oriented companies have created MSDS files, most do so only to satisfy foreign customers, often with minimal effort. However, an increasing number of chemical companies are now realizing the value of MSDS in enhancing their corporate image and opening up international markets. As a result, many are willing to invest significant resources into this process. For example, Zhejiang Chuanhua Group Co., Ltd. began creating MSDS documents for hundreds of its chemical products as early as 2003.
