January China's auto production and sales remain stable and passenger cars grow faster

Beijing, February 15 — According to the latest data released by the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers on Thursday, China’s auto production and sales remained stable in January this year. While both production and sales saw a month-on-month decline, they still outperformed the same period last year, with a notable surge in passenger car output and sales.
In January, domestic auto production reached 521,600 units, while sales totaled 530,100 units. Compared to the previous month, production fell by 7.15% and sales dropped by 14.6%, but year-on-year growth was strong—up 28.24% and 44.62% respectively. Passenger cars accounted for the majority of the market, with 396,600 units produced and 418,900 sold. This represents a 3.99% and 8.08% drop from December, yet a significant increase of 51.95% and 72.63% compared to January 2023.
Commercial vehicle production and sales were lower, at 1.3 million and 1.111 million units respectively, down 15.52% and 32.61% from the previous month. Year-on-year, they decreased by 12.76% and 10.27%.
Industry analysts highlighted two key trends in January’s auto market. First, production exceeded sales, with a production-to-sales ratio of 101.63%, indicating increased inventory buildup. Second, passenger cars showed robust growth, especially basic sedans. Sedan production and sales stood at 278,400 and 295,500 units, down 5.14% and 10.73% from December, but up 64.12% and 93.77% year-on-year.
Sports utility vehicles (SUVs) saw production of 15,700 units and sales of 14,800, down 20.45% and 35.37% from the previous month, but up 39.40% and 22.64% annually. Multi-purpose vehicles (MPVs) had 13,200 units produced and 13 million sold, with a 11.31% rise in production and a 27.42% drop in sales, showing a year-on-year increase of 18.43% and 87.40%. Cross-type passenger cars recorded 84,300 units produced and 95,600 sold, up 1.84% and 14% from the previous month, with annual growth of 28.36% and 34.37%.
The auto sector continues to show resilience, driven largely by rising demand for passenger cars, signaling a positive outlook for the industry in the coming months.
