"Please help, how can we get an MSDS?" At the start of the new year, reporters received multiple calls from chemical companies asking for assistance. It turns out that as the fifth year of China's WTO accession approached, domestic chemical firms were beginning to realize the importance of chemical safety certification in order to enter international markets.
Chemical safety certification, commonly known as a Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS), is a critical document that provides detailed information about a chemical product. In developed countries, it is legally required for all chemical manufacturers and sellers to provide an MSDS that matches the product exactly. This document must cover 16 essential areas, including physical and chemical properties, flammability, health risks, safe handling and storage, spill response, first-aid procedures, and relevant regulations. In essence, the MSDS acts like an ID card for chemicals in global trade. Without it, products cannot be sold or imported.
In China, MSDS is still a relatively new concept. However, with the growing volume of foreign trade, more companies are now encountering the need for these documents. Especially those exporting specialty chemicals have started to prepare their own MSDS to meet the demands of overseas buyers. Due to the complexity of the data required and varying legal standards across different countries, producing an accurate and compliant MSDS requires high professional expertise. As a result, specialized organizations have emerged in cities like Shanghai, Shenzhen, and Beijing to assist companies in creating these crucial documents.
According to reports, China currently lacks strict legal requirements for the production of MSDS by chemical manufacturers, and its adoption remains low. Although some export-oriented companies have begun to create MSDS for foreign clients, many of them do so only as a formality, resulting in poorly prepared documents. However, an increasing number of chemical companies are now recognizing the value of MSDS in enhancing their brand image and accessing international markets. As a result, they are willing to invest significant resources into this process. For example, Zhejiang Chuanhua Group Co., Ltd. had already produced MSDS for hundreds of its chemical products as early as 2003.
