Guangdong's auto parts import and export trade develops rapidly

Guangzhou, November 4 — As a key pillar of the city's industrial economy, the automobile industry in Guangzhou has developed into a major production base for auto parts, extending its influence across Guangdong Province. According to recent reports from Huangpu Customs, the rapid growth of the local automotive sector has driven a significant rise in the import and export of auto parts.
In the first three quarters of this year, Guangdong Province recorded a total of $1.47 billion in auto parts trade, marking a 34.6% increase compared to the same period last year. Of this, imports reached $956 million, up 31.4%, while exports totaled $512 million, rising by 41%. This surge highlights the growing importance of the auto parts sector in the region's trade activities.
A major portion of these imports comes from Japan, with the country accounting for $886 million worth of auto parts — a 37% increase. Japanese automakers such as Honda, Nissan, and Toyota have established manufacturing bases in Guangzhou, making Japan the primary supplier of auto components in the region. On the export side, the United States and Japan remain the top destinations, with shipments reaching $170 million and $131 million respectively — up 19.7% and 28.7% year-on-year.
The trade dynamics reveal a clear distinction between imported and exported auto parts. Imported components are typically high-tech and high-value, with the "automatic transmission" being a prime example. Guangdong imported $259 million worth of these parts in the first nine months of the year, a 56.3% increase, representing nearly 30% of total imports. In contrast, exports to the U.S. and Japan mainly consist of low-technology, low-value parts, with an average price of just $5.04 per kilogram.
Moreover, Guangdong’s car exports have seen impressive growth. From January to September 2005, the province exported 4,100 vehicles valued at $56.366 million — a staggering 47.2-fold increase in volume and 18.8-fold in value compared to the previous year. Export volumes have been consistently above 1,000 units per month since July, showing strong momentum.
Currently, over 350 auto parts manufacturers operate in Guangdong, many of which are small-scale with limited production capacity and technological sophistication. However, as the Guangzhou automobile industry continues to expand, the auto parts sector is expected to experience another phase of rapid growth, further strengthening the region's position in the global automotive supply chain.
