The first set of domestic large-scale ammonia plant acceptance

China's 200,000-ton-per-year synthetic ammonia plant, developed with independent intellectual property rights, has recently passed expert inspections conducted by the Sichuan Economic Commission at Sichuan Meifeng Chemical Industry Co., Ltd. Industry experts have highlighted that this project marks a significant milestone, as it breaks the long-standing reliance on imported technology for large-scale ammonia production in China. The project, which began construction in 2004 and was designated as a key provincial initiative, involved a total investment of 300 million yuan. With the exception of a hydraulic turbine, all equipment was domestically manufactured, achieving a localization rate of over 98%. This makes it the largest domestically produced large-scale ammonia plant in the country. Compared to two similar plants introduced from abroad, this facility saved approximately 15% in investment. During a 72-hour on-site evaluation, the plant’s output, product quality, and major consumption metrics all met or exceeded design specifications. As of September 10, the plant had been operating continuously for 170 days, producing 160,000 tons of synthetic ammonia. The plant utilizes a proprietary process software package developed by China Chengda Engineering Co., Ltd., using natural gas as a raw material and electricity as a power source. It incorporates several innovative technologies, with key equipment adopting advanced international standards. These were jointly developed by Chengda, Meifeng, and local manufacturers. Except for the ammonia compressor, all compressors are reciprocating types driven by motors. This not only reduces investment by 30% compared to centrifugal compressors but also leverages the abundant hydropower resources in western China. By using electric drives instead of steam drives, the plant has reduced the overall energy consumption of synthetic ammonia production by more than 10%. In addition, companies such as Sichuan Meiji, Fuling Chemicals, and Qinghai Salt Lake have also adopted Chengda’s proprietary engineering designs. Furthermore, Chengda has secured contracts to build a 200,000-ton synthetic ammonia plant and a 300,000-ton urea plant in Turkmenistan, marking its growing influence in the global chemical industry.
