Field Management Techniques of Waxy Corn after Transplanting

1. Ditch System Maintenance: After transplanting, it's essential to clear the drainage system immediately to ensure proper water flow during rain and efficient irrigation during dry periods. This helps maintain the balance of the three main channels—drainage, irrigation, and water retention—ensuring optimal growing conditions for the crop.

2. Management of Small Greenhouse Cultivation: Adjust the temperature inside the greenhouse regularly. On rainy days, keep the structure closed, but allow ventilation for about an hour at noon to prevent excessive humidity. On sunny days, remove the leeward sides between 12 PM and 3 PM to avoid overheating and promote healthy growth of the corn seedlings. By late April, when the plants reach a height of around 60 cm, it’s time to remove the small greenhouses completely.

3. Joint Fertilization: Once the waxy corn reaches the jointing stage (typically when it has 6 to 7 leaves), this is the ideal time to apply a joint fertilizer. Based on soil fertility and plant development, you can apply urea at a rate of 7–8 kg per acre to support rapid growth and strengthen the stalks.

4. Drought Management: After the jointing stage, corn enters its most vigorous growth phase, especially before and after tasselling. If drought occurs, take immediate action. Use furrow irrigation when nighttime temperatures are cooler, and drain excess water from the field before sunrise to maintain moisture levels without overwatering.

5. Panicle Fertilization: During the booting stage, corn transitions from vegetative to reproductive growth. This is a critical time for nutrient uptake, as it directly affects ear size and grain count. Apply urea at 15–20 kg per 666.7 m² when the plant has 12–13 leaves (commonly called the "big bell mouth" stage). This ensures sufficient nutrients, reduces spikelet degeneration, and prevents barren ears.

6. Tassel Removal: Removing tassels is an effective way to reduce nutrient competition and improve air circulation in the field. The amount removed depends on weather and plant condition. In good growing conditions and sunny weather, you can remove tassels once they appear. Otherwise, limit or avoid removal to prevent stress on the plant.

7. Ear Thinning: Waxy corn typically produces multiple ears, but only the top one should be kept. Once the lower ear starts silk, remove it promptly to ensure each plant develops just one strong ear. Be careful not to damage the ear leaves during this process.

8. Timely Harvesting: Harvesting at the right time is crucial for quality and flavor. Different varieties have different maturity periods, usually determined by accumulated heat and overall growth. For fresh corn, harvest when the kernels are in the early milk stage. Waxy corn is best harvested 22–24 days after pollination for the best taste. In hot or dry conditions, maturity may come faster, so monitor closely and harvest promptly to maintain quality.
