Xinhua News Agency, Beijing, August 20 (Reporter Zhang Yi) According to the Department of Electrical and Mechanical Services at the Ministry of Commerce, from January to July this year, China's imports of automobiles and their key parts and accessories reached $10.267 billion, reflecting a year-on-year increase of 25.7%. Despite a sluggish domestic import car market, the growth in key auto parts and accessories outpaced that of整车 imports.
Customs data shows that in the first seven months of the year, China imported 112,254 vehicles, including complete sets of spare parts, valued at $3.459 billion. This represents an increase of 6.6% in volume and 16% in value compared to the same period last year. The value growth was 9.4 percentage points higher than the volume growth, indicating that the average price of imported vehicles continued to rise, with a trend toward higher-end models.
In the same period, the import value of key auto parts reached $2.284 billion, up 42.6% year-on-year, far exceeding the growth rate of vehicle imports. Imports of auto accessories amounted to $4.524 billion, a 26.2% increase compared to the previous year.
In terms of vehicle types, cars and four-wheel drive SUVs accounted for 83% of total imports. Among them, passenger cars made up 65%, while off-road vehicles accounted for 18%. The number of cars imported increased by 20.5% year-on-year, whereas SUV imports fell by 25.4%.
China imported 102,727 vehicles during the first seven months, including cars, off-road vehicles, and minivans. Approximately 87% of these were sourced from Japan, Germany, and South Korea. Japan remained the top supplier, accounting for 38% of the total, followed by Germany at 27% and South Korea at 22%. Imports from the United States, the Czech Republic, and Sweden totaled 3,122, 2,502, and 2,103 units respectively, making up just a small fraction of the overall market.
On the export side, China's auto parts and components exports reached $4.264 billion in the first seven months, marking a 64.3% year-on-year increase. However, the trade deficit in the automotive sector reached as high as $6 billion, highlighting the growing demand for imported vehicles and parts.
