The *Daily Herald* recently published an article exploring the evolving dynamics between the Barrington & Countryside Fire Protection District and the Village of Barrington. The relationship, once stable, is now under strain as both parties consider a potential separation.
During a joint special meeting held on Monday, representatives from both entities engaged in a tense discussion, sharing their concerns and frustrations. For the Barrington & Countryside Fire Protection District, which serves an area spanning over 40 square miles, the main issue is a lack of flexibility in their current contract with the village. They feel constrained in their ability to hire additional personnel or purchase new equipment without village approval.
Barrington & Countryside Fire District President Tom Rowan expressed frustration, stating, “We’re really limited right now. We can’t make decisions on our own.†One of the key points of contention is the need for a new fire tender—a water tank truck that can shoot water from a cannon. The district’s current unit is outdated and being phased out, but they argue it's essential given the lack of fire hydrants in their service area.
However, the Village of Barrington officials maintain that a smaller tender was approved three years ago, and they believe a larger unit isn't necessary. They also point to the district’s low number of fires and existing mutual-aid agreements with neighboring fire departments as reasons to avoid additional spending.
Both sides agreed that the next step should be for the fire district to formally submit a letter detailing its requests and justifications. While the current intergovernmental agreement is set to expire at the end of 2013, fire district leaders are pushing for changes sooner rather than later.
If their demands aren’t met, the possibility of ending the partnership is very real. For the fire district, this could mean establishing its own department or seeking a different vendor to provide services. Village Trustee Robert Windon emphasized the importance of autonomy, saying, “We want to run our department efficiently and with the best interests of taxpayers in mind. If you don’t agree, that’s fine. At the end of the contract, we’ll go our separate ways.â€
