The *Daily Herald* recently published an article exploring the evolving relationship between the Barrington & Countryside Fire Protection District and the Village of Barrington. The piece highlights growing tensions and a potential shift in their long-standing partnership.
At a recent joint special meeting, officials from both entities engaged in a heated discussion about the future of their collaboration. The Barrington Countryside Fire Protection District, which serves an area spanning over 40 square miles, has expressed frustration with the current contractual limitations. They are seeking more autonomy to hire additional staff and acquire new equipment without relying on the village's approval.
Barrington Countryside President Tom Rowan emphasized that the district is "hamstrung" by the existing agreement. He pointed to the need for a new water tender—a large tanker capable of hauling and spraying water from a cannon—as a key example. Their current unit is outdated and being phased out, but they believe it’s essential for effective firefighting, especially since the district lacks fire hydrants.
However, Village officials argue that a smaller tender was approved three years ago, and they don’t see the need for a larger unit given the low number of fires and the availability of mutual-aid agreements with neighboring departments.
Both sides agreed that the next step should be for the fire district to submit a formal letter detailing its requests and justifications. While the current intergovernmental agreement doesn’t expire until the end of 2013, the fire district is pushing for changes sooner rather than later.
If their demands aren't met, both parties appear ready to dissolve the relationship. For the fire district, this could mean establishing an independent department or seeking a new service provider. Village Trustee Robert Windon stated, “We want to run a department the way we feel it should be run: efficiently and thinking of the taxpayers. If you guys don’t like that, that is perfectly fine. Let us know, and at the end of this contract, we’ll all go our separate ways.â€
The article sparks a broader conversation about local governance, resource allocation, and the balance between independence and cooperation. It also raises questions about how such conflicts might affect emergency services in the region.
