QDB Sulfur-tolerant Conversion Catalyst Creates Many Firsts

Qingdao Allied Chemicals Co., Ltd. has introduced the QDB series of sulfur-tolerant shift catalysts, which have gained widespread recognition from industry experts for their outstanding catalytic performance, mechanical strength, and stability. These features have positioned the catalysts at an international advanced level. The QDB series has been successfully implemented in various domestic processes, including ammonia production, methanol manufacturing, and city gas generation, achieving multiple firsts within the country. In January 2007, the QDB catalyst was applied in the world’s first pulverized coal gasification low-water/sulfur-tolerant ammonia plant at Liuzhou Chemical Industry Co., Ltd. This marked a significant breakthrough in filling the gap in sulfur-tolerant shift catalyst applications within the pulverized coal gasification process. It also opened up new possibilities for more efficient, energy-saving, and environmentally friendly synthesis gas production using this technology. In May 2006, the catalyst was successfully used in the first high-pressure low-to-low ammonia plant at Tianji-Gaoping Zhonghua Coal Chemical Industry Co., Ltd. This application filled a critical gap in the use of high-pressure, sulfur-tolerant conversion technology in China. Atmospheric gasification, traditionally used by small and medium-sized enterprises, now benefits from the integration of high-pressure and sulfur-resistant technologies, thanks to the QDB series. This success has provided a valuable model for domestic coal-based plants transitioning to high-pressure, sulfur-tolerant systems. In October 2005, the QDB catalyst was employed in the first domestic high-pressure partial-depth methanol conversion plant at Yantai Guotai Chemical Co., Ltd. This plant, with an annual methanol output of 240,000 tons, was the first to adopt independent Chinese gasification technology. During its initial operation, frequent process fluctuations and frequent start-ups and shutdowns posed challenges. However, the QDB series performed exceptionally well, meeting the demand for a 30% load increase after repeated tests, and was highly praised by users. By April 2008, the QDB catalyst had been in use for over six years in the startup phase of the Yanzhou-Minnan Lunan Fertilizer Plant, setting a national record for continuous operation of more than six years in an all-low-change process. Over this period, the number of startups and shutdowns was reduced by at least 10 times, significantly improving the catalyst's activity and stability under low-sulfur conditions. It also resolved issues related to poor strength and powdering, delivering substantial economic benefits. Recently, Qingdao Allied Chemicals signed an agreement with Anhui Linquan to supply the first set of sulfur-tolerant conversion catalysts for aerospace gasification. These are expected to be operational in the second half of the year. This development highlights the growing capabilities of China’s self-developed gasification and sulfur-tolerant conversion technologies, signaling a shift away from foreign products and breaking the monopoly held by international companies in this critical area.
