On the morning of July 29, the Institute of Acoustics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, China Shipbuilding Heavy Industry International Trading Co., Ltd., and Bohai Shipbuilding Heavy Industry Co., Ltd. signed a contract for the construction of a new comprehensive scientific research vessel in Beijing. The ceremony was attended by several key figures, including Lu Yongxiang, Vice Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress, and the President of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. Li Changyin, General Manager of China Shipbuilding Industry Corporation, also delivered remarks at the event, which was hosted by Li Zhigang, Secretary General of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
The project, first proposed in 2002 by the Institute of Acoustics, the South China Sea Institute of Oceans, and the Shenyang Institute of Automation, has finally come to life after nearly four years of detailed planning and design. The new research vessel, with a displacement of 2,500 tons, is the first large-scale small waterplane area twin hull (SWATH) ship in China. This innovative design offers greater stability and performance in rough seas, making it ideal for long-term oceanographic research. The ship will be built by Bohai Shipbuilding Heavy Industry Co., Ltd., marking a significant step forward in China's marine science capabilities.
