Qingdao Allied Chemicals Co., Ltd. has introduced the QDB series of advanced sulfur-tolerant shift catalysts, which have gained widespread recognition from industry experts for their outstanding catalytic performance, mechanical strength, and stability. These features have placed the catalysts at an international advanced level. To date, the QDB series has been successfully implemented in various industrial applications, including ammonia production, methanol synthesis, and city gas manufacturing across different domestic processes, achieving multiple firsts in the country.
In January 2007, the QDB catalyst was applied for the first time in a world-class pulverized coal gasification low-water/sulfur-tolerant ammonia plant at Liuzhou Chemical Industry Co., Ltd. This marked a significant breakthrough in filling the gap in sulfur-tolerant shift catalyst application within the pulverized coal gasification sector. The successful implementation opened up new pathways for efficient, energy-saving, and environmentally friendly production of synthetic gas using pulverized coal technology.
In May 2006, the QDB catalyst was also used in the first high-pressure low-to-low ammonia plant at Tianji-Gaoping Zhonghua Coal Chemical Industry Co., Ltd., marking the first domestic application of catalysts for pressure greater than 3.5 MPa. Atmospheric gasification is a traditional method widely used by small and medium-sized enterprises in China. The key to integrating high-pressure and sulfur-tolerant conversion technology lies in the effective use of the catalyst. The successful deployment of the QDB series provided a solid example for domestic coal-based facilities to support high-pressure, sulfur-resistant plants.
In October 2005, the QDB catalyst was applied in the first domestic high-pressure partial oxidation methanol plant at Yantai Guotai Chemical Co., Ltd. This 240,000-ton-per-year methanol facility was the first in China to adopt independently developed gasification technology. During its initial operation, the plant faced frequent process fluctuations and more frequent start-ups and shutdowns. Despite this, the QDB series demonstrated excellent performance, meeting the requirement of a 30% load increase after repeated tests, and was well received by users.
By April 2008, the QDB catalyst had been in operation for over six years at the Yanzhou-Minnan Lunan Fertilizer Plant, setting a national record for continuous operation of more than six years in an all-low-change process. Over that period, the number of startups and shutdowns was reduced by at least ten times. This not only enhanced the catalyst’s activity and stability under low-sulfur conditions but also completely resolved issues related to strength and powdering, delivering significant economic benefits.
Recently, Qingdao Allied Chemicals signed an agreement with Anhui Linquan to supply the first set of sulfur-tolerant conversion catalysts for aerospace gasification, expected to be operational in the second half of this year. This development highlights the growing capability of China’s self-developed gasification and sulfur-tolerant conversion technologies to replace foreign products, breaking the monopoly of international companies and reducing reliance on imported high-concentration sulfur-tolerant shift catalysts.
