Shuaifu won the battery order for diesel electric hybrid submarine cable boat

Recently, as the world's leading designer and manufacturer of advanced industrial battery, Saft and ABB Marine signed a supply contract to provide dedicated high-power liquid cooling lithium for ABB's latest diesel-electric hybrid submarine cable-laying ship. Ion Super PhosphateTM (SLFP) battery. Saft's batteries provide backup power for cable laying and propulsion systems through efficient energy storage, reducing ship fuel consumption by 27% compared to conventional AC systems, while also reducing maintenance.

ABB's high-voltage cable company has ordered the world's most advanced cable-laying vessels to enhance its submarine cable laying capabilities, allowing AC, DC and fiber-optic cables to be deployed anywhere, with efficiency and precision. The SALT 306 CLV type of cable-laying vessel is considered to be the largest of its kind and is approximately 140 m by 30 m in size and was built by the Norwegian Kleven shipyard. The new vessel is custom-built to ABB and is expected to be delivered in 2017.
The ship's diesel electric propulsion system is powered by six Caterpillar 3516 high-speed propulsion engines (each with approximately 2 MW) as a generator set for three 1900 kW Azipod CZ980 thrusters. The thrust of each thruster is above 34 metric tons, enabling DP3 operation. Through ABB Marine's on-board DC grid, power is converted into electricity, enabling the ship to travel at variable speeds and optimizing engine operation.
The Shuaifude 70 kWh battery system is mainly used for cable laying from the dock to the ship's turntable. According to the newly promulgated emission regulations, the diesel engine must be turned off when the ship is parked, so these operations are mainly powered by shoreline cables. However, if power is interrupted, the battery can remain running for 10 seconds at a maximum load of 800 kW, enough to stop the turntable in a safe, controlled manner.
At sea, the battery system can also be used for peak load suppression, propelling power surges in a short period of time, and enhancing dynamic response when propulsion power needs to increase rapidly.
It is reported that the ABB cable boat is the first ship to install the handsome new generation marine battery system. It uses liquid-cooled lithium ion Super PhosphateTM (SLFP) cylindrical battery technology, which is compared with air-cooled lithium-ion battery technology. The application has significant advantages: a wider operating temperature range, a stronger cycle capability, better battery level temperature control, greater abuse resistance, and higher safety.
“This contract is used for ABB's new cable-laying vessel, which further strengthens the business relationship between Saft and ABB. This is our first product order with ABB Marine for this type of vessel, involving our new generation of high-power liquids. "Cooling the installation of lithium-ion batteries," said Jayesh Vir, key account manager for Saft's Marine Products Division. "This also proves that Saft's marine battery technology is fully capable of meeting the stringent energy storage needs of the largest ocean-going vessels."
The SLFP battery and battery system for the ABB cable-laying vessel will be developed and produced at the Saft's French plant and is expected to be delivered in the fourth quarter of 2016.
