Will County has introduced a state-of-the-art mobile command center designed to support emergency response operations directly at the scene. This new unit, which resembles a large bus in size, is 46 feet long and stands 13.5 feet high, weighing an impressive 42,260 pounds. The vehicle was custom-built by Farber Specialty Vehicles of Ohio and features a Freightliner chassis with a Cummins turbo diesel engine.
The Incident Command Center is equipped with advanced technology that far surpasses previous models, according to Harold Damron, the county’s emergency management director. “This is a game-changer,†he said. “It allows us to bring a fully functional command post to any incident, whether it's a major disaster or a large-scale event.â€
Inside, there are 10 workstations for the incident commander and key personnel, ensuring all necessary tools and communication systems are on hand. The vehicle includes a centralized radio control system that allows users to access multiple frequencies through a computer interface. This setup enables seamless communication between different agencies without the need to manually switch radios.
Additionally, the vehicle serves as a backup communications hub in case of disruptions to 911 or other public safety networks. It carries three full 911-capable workstations in the rear, ready to be deployed wherever needed. The unit, which cost approximately $1.15 million, was funded largely through grants, with 20% coming from 911 surcharge funds.
This mobile command center represents a major investment in Will County’s ability to respond quickly and efficiently to emergencies, providing critical support during times of crisis.
