On Sunday morning, April 21, 2019, firefighters from Lyons responded to a serious collision at Forest View Terminal Drive and Harlem Avenue involving a car and a gasoline tanker. The vehicle was trapped underneath the massive tanker, and the driver was stuck inside. In an effort to safely extract the driver, a Foam Task Force was dispatched from O'Hare Airport to assist local emergency crews on the scene.
The situation required specialized equipment and expertise due to the potential risk of fuel leakage and fire. Firefighters from both the Chicago Fire Department and the airport’s Emergency Response Team worked together to apply foam to stabilize the area and create a safer environment for rescue operations.
Several photographs captured the dramatic scene, showing the car wedged beneath the tanker and the foam being applied by emergency personnel. These images were taken by photographers Tim Olk and Gordon J. Nord, Jr., providing a visual record of the incident and the coordinated response.
The rescue operation highlighted the importance of collaboration between different emergency services, especially in high-risk situations involving hazardous materials. Fortunately, the driver was successfully freed and transported to a nearby hospital for further evaluation. No injuries were reported among the responding firefighters or bystanders.
This incident serves as a reminder of the critical role that emergency responders play in ensuring public safety, even under the most challenging circumstances.
