Hey everyone,
I just got this update from Larry Shapiro about a pretty intense house fire that happened early this morning. Around 3AM, the Prospect Heights Fire Department got a call about a fire at 1201 N. Stratford Road, near Rand Road. By the time they arrived, they learned that there was a 14-year-old boy trapped inside the house, while the rest of the family was already outside. Police officers tried to go in and look for him, but had to retreat due to heavy smoke and flames.
The first vehicle on the scene was Arlington Heights Engine 2, which found the fire raging fiercely in the middle of the house. Since the area doesn’t have hydrants, they had to set up supply lines—one running to a street in Arlington Heights in one direction, and another to a shopping center across Rand Road in the other. Unfortunately, Engine 2 ran into some mechanical trouble that temporarily interrupted water supply. Thankfully, Prospect Heights Tower 9 managed to get additional lines going.
A Box Alarm was called in, along with extra ambulances, because both adults from the house and three police officers needed medical attention. One ambulance was kept on standby in case the boy needed to be rescued. After some time, it was confirmed that the boy wasn’t actually at home, and he was later found safe somewhere else. In the end, two people were taken to the hospital.
I’ve included some photos from the scene below. As you can see, the fire was massive and completely engulfed the house. Firefighters had to cut through parts of the structure to try and locate the boy. It’s always a relief when things turn out okay in situations like these, but it’s a reminder of how dangerous these situations can be for everyone involved.
