Late Sunday evening, as thunderclouds rolled over Glenview, the local 9-1-1 center received urgent calls about a fire at an apartment building located at 2700 Summit Drive. The storm was fierce, with lightning strikes illuminating the dark sky. By the time emergency services arrived after 10 PM, the four-story L-shaped structure was already showing signs of smoke and flames licking at the roof.
The initial response was swift, with Glenview Engines 6 and 13, Battalion 6, Ambulance 6, Glenview Truck 14 (which was operating with Engine 8R), and Northfield Truck 29 heading out. Upon arrival, the alarm was escalated to Code 4, bringing additional resources including Glenview Engine 8, Glenview Ambulance 7, Northbrook Truck 12, and Morton Grove Squad 4. Interestingly, Northbrook Truck 12 had just returned from another Code 4 fire in their own district when they were called to this incident.
Photographer Larry Shapiro captured the action as Northfield Truck 29 became the first ladder truck on the scene since Glenview Truck 14’s unit was running with a spare engine. The firefighters wasted no time; both trucks deployed their aerial ladders to the roof, swiftly containing the fire to the area of origin. The damage to the roof was visible but limited, thanks to the rapid response and effective firefighting efforts.
Glenview Truck 14, equipped with Engine 8R, proved particularly efficient due to its additional compartment space, allowing it to carry more essential gear. Despite the quick knockdown, photographers Tim Olk and Larry Shapiro found enough to document, capturing moments that showcased the teamwork and professionalism of the responders. As the fire was brought under control, Glenview Engine 6 was on the scene flaunting their newly acquired Pierce Arrow XT engine. The collaborative effort between departments ensured minimal damage to the building, with the firefighters managing to keep the situation well-contained. The night concluded with crews ensuring all potential hazards were mitigated, leaving the community grateful for the dedication of their local emergency services.
