Glen Ellyn Volunteer Fire Department news
Excerpts from the DailyHerald.com: The Glen Ellyn village board is considering raising fire service fees to cover operational costs and create a reserve fund for future building projects at both of the village's fire stations. During a meeting on Monday night, trustees gave initial approval to the proposed rate increases for five different property categories. Homeowners would see their monthly fee double, from $7.50 to $15. Small businesses occupying less than 20,000 square feet would also face a significant increase, with fees rising to $16 per month. This adjustment is expected to bring in around $1.6 million annually for the fire department. It’s an unusual move for a community that relies on approximately 60 volunteer firefighters, who are paid just $1 per year. In addition, the fire company will receive $151,500 this year from two special taxing districts. The additional funds would allow the village to allocate nearly $750,000 each year toward potential upgrades or replacements of the two fire stations. The downtown station, located on Main Street and Pennsylvania Avenue, was built in the 1950s and is the older of the two. A space study of both buildings may be commissioned later this year, with results expected by 2018. Financial advisors have also recommended setting aside about $400,000 annually for equipment needs. One upcoming decision is whether to purchase a new ladder truck later this spring. Currently, the fire service fees generate roughly $803,000 per year, while operational costs are estimated at around $700,000. The fees were introduced nearly three years ago to replace a donation-based funding model, which only saw about 20% of property owners contributing. At the time of implementation, officials had projected collecting about $70,000 in fees from property owners in an area east of I-355 and north of Roosevelt Road. However, these residents already pay property taxes to a separate fire protection district that contracts services from the Village of Lombard. The mistake was identified before any bills were sent out, and the board is now preparing for a vote on the proposed increases as early as March 20. If approved, the higher fees could appear on water bills starting in June.
