Working fire in Chicago, 6-28-14

I just got off the phone with Eric Haak, who sent me some pictures from a fire he witnessed in the Beverly neighborhood of Chicago. It happened on Saturday afternoon, around 1 p.m., when a sudden and intense thunderstorm rolled through the area. The storm didn't last long, but it packed quite a punch. A strong gust of wind, lasting about half a minute, came roaring out of nowhere and knocked down a big tree branch onto some powerlines behind a house on Longwood Drive. As luck would have it, I was nearby and managed to capture some photos while the firefighters were hard at work. From what I could see, the fire seemed to start near the bottom of the exterior wall and quickly spread upward toward the attic. Thankfully, the Chicago Fire Department responded swiftly, and within just 15 minutes, they had the situation under control. It's always fascinating to watch how these professionals operate during emergencies. In one of the photos, you can see firefighters using a hose line to douse the flames, while another shot shows Engine 120 pulling up to the scene, ready to assist. There’s also an impressive image of one of their E-ONE aerial ladders in action—imagine the skill required to maneuver something like that in tight spaces! You’ll notice a firefighter wielding a chainsaw at the top of the ladder in yet another photo; they were cutting away debris to prevent further damage or danger. For those who don’t often venture to this part of the city, it’s worth noting how quickly things can change here due to weather conditions. While storms like this one might be brief, their impact can be significant if precautions aren’t taken. Anyway, I hope sharing these photos gives everyone a better sense of what happened and how prepared our local firefighters are to handle such situations.
