Utilizing optical sensors Finland develops first hyperspectral mobile device

[China Instrument Network Instrument Development] The Finnish VTT National Technical Research Center has successfully developed the world's first hyperspectral mobile device by converting the iPhone camera into a new optical sensor, which will bring new applications to low-cost hyperspectral imaging applications. The prospects, such as consumers will be able to use mobile phones for food quality testing or health monitoring.

Spectral imaging is widely used for various object sensing and material property analysis. Hyperspectral imaging performs spectral analysis on each pixel in the image to achieve a wide range of measurements. Hyperspectral cameras have been used in medical, industrial, space, and environmental sensing under harsh environmental conditions, but are expensive.

The hyperspectral mobile device developed by VTT integrates the smart sensor with the Internet by integrating an adjustable tiny MEMS (Micro-Electro-Mechanical-Electro-System) filter with the camera lens of the iPhone and synchronizing its adjustment function with the camera's image capture system. This makes it possible to develop new mobile applications using cost-effective optical MEMS spectroscopy, such as the use of vehicles and drones for consumer applications such as environmental observations, health monitoring, and food analysis.

Consumers can benefit from health applications. For example, a mobile phone will be used to check if a color mite is malignant or food is edible. It can also be used to verify product authenticity or user identification based on biometric data. On the other hand, based on the full-spectrum information of each pixel, the driverless car will be able to sense and identify environmental features.

The development of today's smart devices offers tremendous opportunities for image data processing and various cloud services based on spectral data, and mass sensor production technology will make it possible to introduce hyperspectral imaging in devices that currently use low-cost camera sensors.

The VTT National Technical Research Center is actively seeking business cooperation to realize the commercialization of this technology.
