Background
Recycled PET bottle flakes are produced from waste beverage bottles through steps such as sorting, crushing, washing, and drying. Therefore, recycled PET bottle flakes can be produced in any location where beverage consumption occurs. As one of the main markets for importing recycled PET bottle flakes, more than 10-13 million tons of PET bottle flakes are imported into China every year.
In 2017, environmental regulations in China became increasingly strict, completely banning the import of waste plastics into the country. As part of waste plastics, recycled PET could no longer be imported in the form of bales or flakes. According to Chinese environmental regulations, recycled plastics can only be imported as granules or chips. This makes it necessary for PET bottle flake recyclers to re-pelletize the flakes before export.
One of the key challenges during the re-pelletizing process is avoiding hydrolysis of PET flakes. A large displacement ventilation system is required to minimize the reduction of IV (intrinsic viscosity). Additionally, the yellowing effect caused by high temperatures must be minimized. An automatic pelletizing method is also essential to reduce labor intensity and ensure stable, high output.

- Enough pre-drying time is needed before the flakes enter the re-pelletizing step. ACERETECH uses either a venting-type compactor or a lifting-type drying hopper to remove moisture from the flakes, preventing PET hydrolysis during processing.
- Combining the modular design of the processing section with the efficient degassing structure of the twin-screw extruder and an automatic 3-level Roots vacuum pump system ensures that the vacuum pressure reaches -0.1MPa, effectively removing volatiles from PET melts and minimizing IV value reduction.
- Optimized process steps and specialized processing sections of the twin-screw extruder allow continuous and efficient transformation of PET flakes from solid to liquid state, reducing the risk of yellowing due to dead zones or localized high temperatures.
- The strands pelletizing system is a common method for PET pelletizing. The strands produced from the extruder’s die are manually placed into a water trough for cooling, then dried using an air knife device and cut into granules or chips by a rotary blade. This method requires more labor and skilled operation, making it suitable for capacities below 600kg/h.
- However, for high-capacity PET pelletizing tasks, the strands method is not ideal. An automatic and reliable underwater pelletizing system is necessary to ensure high output and automation performance.
