Story Bikes Funds a School in Zimbabwe
Thank you for helping the students of Nejambezi Secondary School in Jambezi Village, near Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe. Your generous support has made a real difference in their lives and the lives of their families. At World Bicycle Relief, we believe that education is the key to breaking the cycle of poverty and disease. For many students in rural areas, a bicycle is more than just a mode of transport—it's a lifeline. It helps them travel long distances to school, return home safely, and even assist their families with daily tasks. Our Buffalo Bicycles are built to last. They’re simple, strong, and designed for rough terrain. Each bike is assembled locally, which not only ensures quality but also creates jobs in the community. This local production helps build sustainable development and empowers people through economic opportunity. In addition to providing bicycles, our Bicycles for Education Empowerment Program (BEEP) works closely with local communities. We train members of the community to form the Bicycle Supervisory Committee (BSC), which plays an important role in monitoring the program and ensuring its success. The BSC sets guidelines for selecting students who will receive the bicycles, based on factors like distance traveled and personal need. They also ensure that the bikes are used responsibly and maintained properly. Monthly meetings help keep everyone informed and engaged, creating a sense of shared responsibility and ownership. We also train local mechanics to maintain and repair the bicycles. This not only keeps the program running smoothly but also opens up new job opportunities in the community. It’s a win-win for everyone involved. Every year, schools host a special Bicycle Distribution Ceremony, a joyful event filled with excitement and celebration. It's a moment that symbolizes hope, opportunity, and the start of a new journey for the students. During the ceremony, students and their parents or guardians sign a contract that confirms the bicycle becomes their personal property after graduation. In return, the students agree to attend school regularly and use the bike to support their families, as long as it doesn’t interfere with their studies. Thanks to your generous donation, 120 students at Nejambezi Secondary School received life-changing bicycles at the recent Bicycle Distribution Ceremony.
