Story Bikes Funds a School in Zimbabwe
Thank you for helping the students of Nejambezi Secondary School in Jambezi Village, near Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe. Your generous support has made a real difference in their lives, enabling them to access education and build a brighter future. At World Bicycle Relief, we believe that education is a powerful tool for breaking the cycle of poverty and disease. For these students, a bicycle isn't just a mode of transport—it's a lifeline. It helps them travel long distances to school safely and efficiently, giving them more time to study and less time walking. Buffalo Bicycles are designed specifically for rural conditions, built to last, and made to carry heavy loads. They’re assembled locally, which not only ensures quality but also creates jobs and supports local economies. As part of our Bicycles for Education Empowerment Program (BEEP), we work closely with local communities to ensure long-term success. One key element is the Bicycle Supervisory Committee (BSC), which is made up of community members trained to oversee the program and maintain accountability. The BSC helps select students who need bicycles most, based on distance traveled and other vulnerability factors. They also create guidelines to ensure proper use and care of the bikes. Monthly meetings help us track progress and address any challenges the students might face. We also train local mechanics to repair and maintain the bicycles, which strengthens the community’s skills and provides new job opportunities. This approach not only keeps the program running smoothly but also empowers people to take charge of their own development. The Buffalo Bicycles are more than just transportation—they're a symbol of hope and opportunity. At the Bicycle Distribution Ceremony, students, parents, and teachers come together in celebration to mark this important milestone in the students' educational journey. During the event, students sign a contract that gives them ownership of the bike after graduation. In return, they agree to attend school regularly and use the bicycle to improve their families’ livelihoods—without compromising their studies. Thanks to your generous donation, 120 students at Nejambezi Secondary School received life-changing bicycles during the ceremony.
Our goal for 2019 and beyond is to continue innovating and working with communities to empower children through education. With your ongoing support, we can reach even more students who are held back by distance and lack of resources. Every bicycle we provide is more than just a gift—it’s an investment in a child’s future. We believe that when kids have access to education, they grow into leaders, entrepreneurs, and changemakers who lift up their entire communities.
