From Prospect Heights Deputy Chief Drew Smith:
**Prospect Heights Squad 9 Update**
The Prospect Heights Fire Protection District recently welcomed a brand-new squad pumper to replace their aging 18-year-old vehicle. The old Squad 9 has now been taken out of service, while the shiny new model is set to hit the streets starting June 2nd. This state-of-the-art Squad 9 comes fully equipped with cutting-edge firefighting technology and essential emergency response gear.
This new addition carries a crew of four seated members and boasts impressive specifications including a powerful 1,000-GPM pump, a 500-gallon water tank, and 90 gallons of foam for tackling various types of fires. It also features front and rear winches, along with an extensive hose configuration that includes 500 feet of 5-inch hose, 600 feet of 2 ½-inch hose, and 800 feet of 1 ¾-inch hose. For firefighting operations, it’s fitted with preconnected attack hoses, including 1 ¾-inch lines, a 2 ½-inch hose measuring 600 feet, specialized high-rise packs, and a master stream option for large-scale incidents.
In terms of medical support, the new Squad 9 is fully stocked with Advanced Life Support (ALS) equipment for EMS responses. Additionally, it carries a comprehensive set of truck company tools such as hand tools, saws, fans, tarps, and salvage tools. For vehicle accidents, it’s equipped with auto extrication gear, which includes spreaders, cutters, rams, airbags, struts, cribbing, and air tools. Water and ice rescue operations are supported by Personal Flotation Devices (PFDs), exposure suits, throw bags, buoys, ropes, and Rescue Dive Comm sets.
Hazardous materials (Haz Mat) and Technical Rescue Team (TRT) readiness is ensured with pads, booms, decontamination setups, Level B suits, ropes and hardware, Stokes baskets, and hand tools.
Here’s a quick comparison between the old and new Squad 9 units:
| **Feature** | **Old Squad 9** | **New Squad 9** |
|----------------------|-------------------------------|--------------------------------|
| **Chassis** | Older model | Commercial chassis |
| **Cascade System** | Yes | No |
| **Inflatable Boat** | Included | Special call delivery only |
| **Firefighting Gear**| Similar | Enhanced hose configurations |
Although the new Squad 9 operates on a commercial chassis, it retains all the necessary attack hose lines and firefighting equipment found in the previous model. However, it does not include a cascade system or an inflatable boat. The latter will continue to be available but must be specially requested and transported via another vehicle when needed.
As of today, we’re thrilled to have this upgraded resource at our disposal. Stay tuned for more updates as the Prospect Heights FPD continues enhancing its capabilities!
