**Excerpts from the kcchronicle.com:**
A severe multi-car collision resulting in multiple injuries unfolded early Saturday morning, June 20th, 2020, on Dunham Road just north of Army Trail Road in Wayne. Fox River & Countryside Fire Rescue District Fire Chief John Nixon described the scene as "utter chaos," stating that the accident spanned nearly 100 yards along the roadway.
“The first emergency call came in at 10:20 a.m.,†Chief Nixon recounted. “When we arrived, it was absolute pandemonium. There were numerous victims, and we immediately began prioritizing those with the most critical injuries."
The incident began when a black SUV suddenly halted while traveling southbound on Dunham Road and was struck from behind by a red SUV. The black SUV, occupied by a woman and her two children, was then pushed into a semi-truck loaded with gravel. The red SUV rebounded off the black SUV and rolled over into a ditch. Simultaneously, a garbage truck crashed into the rear of the black SUV, spun off the road, and collided with a large tree, trapping both the driver and passenger inside. The red SUV's occupants sustained minor injuries but did not require extraction.
"The front of the garbage truck doesn’t provide much structural protection," Chief Nixon explained. "The two men inside were severely pinned when the dashboard collapsed on them. It took us almost 90 minutes to free them from the wreckage. We stayed on-site for a total of three hours ensuring everything was secure. The last victim was transported away roughly two hours after the crash."
The garbage truck driver suffered significant trauma to his lower body and was airlifted via helicopter to Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove. His passenger was taken to a nearby medical facility. The driver of the gravel truck sustained only minor injuries.
Assisting at the scene were personnel from the South Elgin & Countryside Fire Protection District, Carol Stream Fire Department, Elburn & Countryside Fire Protection District, Bartlett Fire Protection District, and St. Charles Fire Department.
