New Glenview fire station passes first hurdle

The Chicago Sun-Times recently published an article discussing the approval of the final site plan for Glenview's new fire station headquarters, located at 1815 Glenview Road. The decision was made during a public hearing, giving local residents the opportunity to share their thoughts and concerns about the upcoming development. Most of the feedback focused on potential issues related to noise and lighting. Residents were particularly worried about the sound from emergency vehicles and the brightness of the station’s lights. In response, Deputy Fire Chief Ralph Ensign explained that sirens and horns would only be used when absolutely necessary, even during daylight hours. Additionally, the redesigned traffic layout at the entrance is intended to reduce the need for loud alerts when trucks enter or exit the facility. Regarding the lighting concerns, Jeff Brady, Glenview’s director of planning, noted that the proposed landscaping and fencing will serve as a natural buffer between the station and nearby homes. The fire department is also using newer trucks with lower-mounted headlights, which are designed to minimize glare into residential windows. During the meeting, the Plan Commission provided some design recommendations to the architects from the AT Group, who are overseeing the project. One major point of discussion was the architectural style of the building, which combines a residential-like administrative section with a more commercial-style fire station. Commission member Mark W. Igleski commented, “It looks like two different buildings.” This concern was echoed by Ellen Dickson, who expressed discomfort with the residential elements in the administrative wing, such as high ceilings and peaked gables. She argued that the space should reflect a civic structure rather than a private home, stating, “This is not a residence. Basically, we’re building empty space for looks.” The commission’s suggestions will now be reviewed by the appearance board on Wednesday. If everything checks out, the final plan could be presented to the Village Board for approval at their meeting on September 17.
