The Chicago Sun-Times recently published an article discussing the approval of the final site plan for Glenview’s new fire station headquarters, located at 1815 Glenview Road. The decision was made during a public hearing by the Glenview Plan Commission, giving local residents the opportunity to share their thoughts and concerns about the proposed facility.
Most of the feedback focused on potential issues with noise and lighting. Concerns about noise from emergency vehicles were addressed by Deputy Fire Chief Ralph Ensign, who emphasized that sirens and horns are only used when necessary, even during daytime hours. Additionally, the redesigned traffic layout at the station's entrance is expected to minimize the need for loud alerts as trucks enter and exit.
Regarding the lighting issue, Jeff Brady, Glenview’s director of planning, explained that the planned landscaping and fencing will serve as a visual buffer. Furthermore, the new fire trucks are equipped with lower-mounted headlights, reducing the risk of glare into nearby homes.
Commissioners also provided some design recommendations to the architects from the AT Group, who are overseeing the project. One major point of discussion was the contrast between the residential-style administrative wing and the more utilitarian design of the fire station itself. Commission member Mark W. Igleski remarked that the building appeared as if it were two separate structures.
Ellen Dickson, another commission member, expressed concern over the residential features in the administrative area, such as high ceilings and peaked gables. She argued that the building should reflect its civic purpose rather than resemble a private home. “This isn’t a residence,†she said. “We’re essentially creating empty space for aesthetics. I urge the Village Board to keep the design consistent and make sure it looks like the civic building it is.â€
These design suggestions will be reviewed by the appearance board on Wednesday. If no further changes are required, the final plan may be presented to the Village Board at their meeting on September 17.
