Japan launches "Ultra Clean Ship Machine" R&D project

The world's largest producer of marine diesel engines, Japan, in response to new requirements for gas emissions from the International Maritime Organization and the European Union, the marine industry will be the first to launch the "Ultra Clean Marine Diesel Engine" worldwide with the support of the Japanese consortium. Research and development work to reduce nitrogen emissions by 80%.

The development of the “Ultra Clean Marine Diesel Engine” is expected to complete the offshore operation test within 5 years, and its ground test will be completed within 3 and a half years. The research and development is divided into three parts: the "low-speed diesel engine" group with Mitsubishi Heavy Industries as the main body, the "medium speed diesel engine" group with Niigata prime mover as the main body, and the "small high-speed diesel engine" group with Yanmar as the main body. At present, the preparation work for each project is progressing smoothly.

In terms of low-speed machine development, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and Akasaka Iron Works are developing SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction Unit) for four-stroke and two-stroke diesel engines in order to achieve the goal of reducing nitrogen emissions by 60% to 80%. 370 million yen. In the development of medium-speed machines, Niigata prime movers, Daihatsu diesel engines and Mitsui Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. aim to reduce nitrogen emissions by 80%. For medium-speed four-stroke diesel engines, SCR denitration devices that can cope with fuel improvement and high-temperature exhaust gas are being developed. The total cost of technology development and development is about 640 million yen. In the research and development of small high-speed diesel engines, since the fuel of the small high-speed main engine is mainly low-sulfur A heavy oil and the machine is placed in a small space, how to realize the miniaturization of the denitration device has become an important issue to be solved. In the auxiliary machine, since C heavy oil is used as fuel, the development of a denitration device for high-concentration sulfur has become an important issue.
