Earth Covered Magazine (ECM) structures are essential for securely storing ammunition and explosives, commonly used by the Department of Defense and the US military. The process began by making perpendicular saw cuts across all cracks in the floor and walls. HJ3’s patented carbon laminate strips were then meticulously inserted into each saw cut, held in place with epoxy injection. The entire interior of the bunker was thoroughly cleaned using abrasive blasting to remove any delaminated concrete and dust. A cementitious grout was applied to restore the bunker’s uniform surface. Lastly, the CarbonSeal™ carbon fiber was saturated and installed along the cracked walls and ceiling.
Remarkably, the magazine bunker repair project was completed in just one day. Choosing to repair the cracked bunker instead of replacing it led to significant cost savings and prevented the waste of valuable resources tied to producing new concrete and steel. This eco-friendly approach avoided over 4 tons of steel and concrete from potentially being dumped in landfills, saved nearly 250,000 gallons of water, conserved about 33,000 kWh of energy, and reduced over 8 tons of carbon dioxide emissions from entering the atmosphere.
